Eurocom Panther 5SE review: 12-core Xeon server power in laptop form

Eurocom has managed to pack a set of server-class components into a clamshell form factor without making too many compromises. The Panther 5SE is expensive though, so you'll need to make a good use case for buying one.

Once a year, we like to get hold of performance-laptop specialist Eurocom's flagship system, just to see what the leading edge of mobile functionality and performance looks like. Last year's offering was the workstation-class Panther 5D. This year, Eurocom sent us the Panther 5SE, which it describes as "a new, innovative category of server-class heavy-duty Intel Xeon-based laptop".

Obviously server-class components in a laptop form factor are not everyday requirements, but in situations where a network needs setting up in a challenging location, a luggable clamshell server -- even one weighing over 7kg with the power brick -- would be a credible option.

The star of the Panther 5SE show is its CPU, the 12-core/24-thread Xeon E5-2697 v2, which runs at 2.7GHz (3.5GHz in Turbo Mode) and has a TDP of 130W (hence the need for all that cooling). You can configure plenty of less expensive Xeon models, starting with the 2GHz E5-2620, or E5-2620 v2. In our review system, the top-end 12-core CPU was supported by the maximum 32GB of RAM in four 8GB DIMMs.

The GPU in our review system was an Nvidia Quadro 5100M with 1,536 parallel CUDA cores and 8GB of dedicated video memory. There are multiple GPU options, ranging from the entry-level 3GB, 960 CUDA-core Nvidia GTX 670MX up to a pair of SLI-enabled Quadro 5100Ms, which would add no less than £2,747 (ex. VAT) to the base price. You can also specify from a smaller selection of AMD GPUs, including the Radeon R9-M290X.

    Performance & battery life
Given the specifications described above, it should come as no surprise to find that the Panther 5SE is an excellent performer.

A server-class laptop is clearly a specialist purchase, but Eurocom has managed to pack a set of powerful components into a clamshell form factor without making too many compromises.

Applied Engineering Software Group turns to EUROCOM Panther 5SE Mobile Server for its X79 chipset in a laptop running an Intel Xeon processor

Applied Engineering Software Group turned to the EUROCOM Panther 5SE Mobile Server for its X79 chipset in a laptop that could run an Intel Xeon class server processor for managing storage, network and server operations for third party contractors.

Applied Engineering Software Group was initially attracted to the EUROCOM Panther 5SE due to its ability to handle a server class Intel Xeon processor. They are sometimes, running anywhere between 50 to 100 virtual machines and require the ability to model complex network problems.

Gregory Carter owns and operates Applied Engineering Software Group, AESGI, in Wisconsin. AESGI manages storage, network and server operations for third-party contractors for a variety of companies, primarily in the ISP, telecommunications and logistics and supply industry. Secondarily, AESGI, deals with enterprise operations and analytic measurement and problem resolution in the same areas. A lot of their time is spent tracking down problems and redesigning issues of data center operations or cloud computing operations that are not working optimally.

Before the Panther 5SE Mobile Server, AESGI used to haul around a desktop class system in excess of 80 pounds to and from customer sites. The problems didn't end there, sometimes simply plugging in the desktop machine would pull 600 watts and trip a UPS as well. The Panther 5SE, on the other hand, simply nibbles around 130 watts.

    Игровые и специальные ноутбуки - EUROCOM Panther 5SE ←

Eurocom Panther 5D Notebook Review: Faster Than Your Desktop

There's a good chance that Eurocom's Panther 5D notebook is faster than your desktop. The sample we're reviewing sports a six-core Core i7-3970X, two GeForce GTX 680M modules in SLI, 32 GB of DDR3-1600, and three 256 GB SSDs. Talk about a beast!

This thing is aimed at content creators, gamers, coders; basically, anyone who needs the power of a workstation, but doesn't necessarily want to be tied down to the same desk every day can use it. Configure it with a Xeon processor and up to two Quadro graphics modules. Or go the route we did with a Core i7 and two GeForce GTX GPUs. In both cases, you end up with the alacrity of a desktop in a package you can pick up and move to your next job site or LAN party.

Most of Eurocom’s systems are highly customizable. The company prides itself on providing the highest-quality parts there are, and its online configurator often gives you the option to choose between specific brands. In the Panther 5D, you don’t just add a hard disk. Rather, you choose up to four mechanical or solid-state drives, and then decide if you want storage from Samsung, Crucial, Intel, Seagate, or Hitachi. From there, you can set the drives up in a variety of RAID arrays, or just as a JBOD setup. This flexibility extends to the display panel, networking hardware, power, optical storage, and so on.

When we ordered our review unit, Eurocom was offering the Panther 5D with up to eight-core Xeons and Sandy Bridge-E-based Core i7s. Now, you can go so far as to equip the laptop with 12-core Ivy Bridge-EP-based Xeons, yielding 24 logical cores in a 150 W processor package.

Content creators, engineers, and other professionals who need big performance wherever they go can rely on the Panther. It demonstrated the stability to be a dependable tool, and it is fast enough to get real work done quickly. In fact, the Panther's performance could end up paying for the procurement costs quickly by giving contract workers better productivity, translating into more billable projects in the same number of hours. It's a complete desktop workstation that fits in a large backpack. And Eurocom is quick to point out that the CPUs, GPUs, memory, and storage are all readily upgradable, saving you from buying a new system if you start small and scale up down the road.

We used the Panther for a variety of tasks over a couple of months. During the day we worked with video production, photo editing, and software testing. The Panther was great at chewing through hours of sequential video data. After hours, there was a lot more gaming going on. There's a lot to like about the system's headphone output, too. At the end of the day, Eurocom's configuration never let us down in a task that demanded maximum speed. And while its weaknesses are apparent, it does everything else exceedingly well.

    Знакомство с ноутбуком-сервером Eurocom Panther 5SE

Eurocom Panther 5SE: The Incredible Hulk of notebook computers

Eurocom rocked us with the most powerful per-pound choice in a notebook that we've seen to date.

Eurocom sent our test unit with an Intel E5-2687W that clocks at 3.1GHz. It has eight cores and sixteen threads, and so makes for a rational NOC-grade 1U equivalent server platform.

We rate this device highly for its extreme flexibility and muscularity.

The server is ready to roll quickly. We say that, and then remember that its form-factor is actually that of an overgrown notebook.

The Eurocom Panther 5SE notebook server has good looks, and more importantly: very serious power for its form-factor. It's vastly heavier than a typical notebook but has the guts of a hefty 1U, NOC-grade server inside. It can be backpacked,

Super Computer Sheds Weight, Gains Mobility, Becomes Server-on-the-Go

The idea of a portable server is appealing to application developers, emergency responders, on-site
trainers and others who need powerful computing solutions wherever they may be. But the trick is in
packing an appropriate amount of processing capability, storage capacity, memory, and back-up battery
into a sub-12 pound form factor.

Eurocom corporation successfully conquered this challenge by outfitting a desktop replacement chassis with the highest quality components, including the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 series and Intel® S3700 solid state drives – chosen for their ability to support both workstation and server-class operations. Known as the EUROCOM Panther 5.0, this new super computer has the performance capabilities of a datacenter server in a portable form factor, complete with workstation tools such as
keyboard and monitor. This clever solution package earned Eurocom the Form Factor Solution Innovation award from Intel. “We had a number of considerations to factor into the solution, including temperature variance and humidity, power consumption and thermal output, internal wiring,
functional ergonomics, and so on,” explained Mark Bialic, Eurocom’s President and CTO. “Our target was a sub-12 pound form factor to enable portability.” Thus:“server-on-the-go.”
