OTTAWA, CANADA - Eurocom Corporation, a Canadian leader in Desktop Replacement technology has taken the next step in the evolution of a desktop computer system with their release of an alternative to a desktop PC, the fully configurable, all-in-one EUROCOM LP285S Portable LCD PC. The new system is designed to accelerate migration to all-portable computing from a desktop-centered architecture.

Migrating to all-portable computing
Eurocom's mission is to replace every single desktop computer with desktop replacement technology. Eurocom offers it customers a complete line of desktop replacement solutions ranging from all-in-one Portable LCD PCs to the notebooks and super notebooks. The Portable LCD PC computer category was developed by Eurocom to accelerate corporate migration to all-portable computing. "The traditional desktop PC industry is dead. The design of a desktop computer has not changed for the last twenty years", says Mark Bialic. "EUROCOM design combines functionality with power and futuristic look to provide a designer technology to more demanding clients."

All-in-one design
Thanks to one-piece design, a single power button conveniently located on the front turns on the entire system. Only one (power) cord emerges from the base, preserving the purity of your desk surface. Integrated stereo speakers and standard built-in wireless 802.11b LAN reduces the usual cluster of wires down to a single power cable.

Industrial design, computer architecture, performance, features, ease-of-use, and upgradeable design - you name it, the EUROCOM LP285S is by far a superior machine and design that you can see for yourself. It's a computer other people will admire in your office or home.

From a computer architecture point of view, the EUROCOM LP285S is better and more cleverly designed than any desktop PC. Eurocom chose to integrate the best of desktop and notebook technologies. Powered by an upgradeable 533 MHz front-side-bus Intel® Pentium® 4 desktop processor (up to 2.8 GHz) and 333 MHz DDR memory, the LP285S supports two notebook's 32-bit Card Bus PC Card slots allowing for easy, externally accessed expandability. Easy to change and/or upgrade standard 3.5-inch desktop hard drive is removable externally.

The EUROCOM LP285S Portable LCD PC is based on three-spindle design supporting concurrent operation of three physical drives, namely 3.5-inch 1.44 MB floppy drive, 3.5-inch 7,200 rpm standard desktop hard drive and a choice of optical drive (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-RW or DVD/CD-RW Combo). A DVD-RAM drive, which can play and record and play DVD's will be available later this year.

Ergonomics
The LP285S LCD-PC offers low power consumption, space savings, esthetics of design, and the limitation of wires through the infrared wireless connectivity (a big infrared port located in the front allows various infrared devices, such as a wireless keyboard and mouse to be easily connected. The EUROCOM LP285S' footprint is just large enough to accommodate the 15-inch tiltable LCD. The 270-degree swivel-base houses a full, desktop-size HDD in an easily removable tray. It also has a built-in, switchable power supply. All ports are easily accessible and discreetly out-of-view.

Power of the desktop, portability of notebook
"We have integrated the best of desktop and notebook technology into a portable, elegant all-in-one system, which has everything and can adapt to anything", says Mark Bialic, President of Eurocom Corporation. "The only thing missing is bulk of desktop PC and… beige color. We offer our customers a truly modern twenty first-century system that is portable, stylish and powerful, but which requires much less space on a desk. When used with a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse, this system becomes a serious competitor to traditional desktop computers", adds Mark Bialic. "What everyone has been looking for in desktop computing technology is a system that is smaller in size than a typical desktop computer, but without compromising its power and functionality. That's exactly what we offer."

Fully Configurable and Upgradeable
The fully configurable EUROCOM LP285S Portable LCD-PC supports both 400 MHz and 533MHz FSB based Intel Pentium 4 up to 2.8 GHz, up to 2 GB of DDR333 SDRAM and up to 120 GB of 3.5" standard desktop hard drive. It comes standard with internal floppy drive and a choice of easy-to-change optical drive from CD-ROM up to CD-RW/DVD Combo. There is a choice of two different sizes of displays, 15" XGA Active TFT (1024x768) or 17" Active TFT SXGA (1280x1024).
The hard drive tray is removable with very easy to get to, but other components are just as accessible. Removing 5 screws on the rear panel reveals the CPU, RAM, CD-drive and option slots. All are easily upgraded with standard components.

Array of I/O ports
The LP285S offers an impressive array of I/O facilities, including four USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port, a pair of PS/2 ports, and legacy serial and parallel ports for older peripherals. The package also includes a built-in antenna for an optional miniPCI wireless LAN module. A built-in handle makes it simple to move the LP-285S from room to room, office to office, and an optional carrying case facilitates moves of greater magnitude.

The EUROCOM LP285S Portable PC doesn't sacrifice anything. "We know that even as you move into the future, you may still need a handle on the past" says Mark Bialic. "So, all the connectivity you'd expect in a regular desktop is here, both legacy and non-legacy ports. We've built in a full compliment of standard "legacy" ports, as well as four USB 2.0 ports, Serial port, IEEE 1394 FireWire, 10/100 LAN, 56K V90/V92 Modem and Wireless LAN. Drawing on the mobile experience, we've included PCMCIA slots for additional devices (i.e. Portable Media, SCSI etc.). When it comes to the communications, there is 10/100 Ethernet, 56K V90/V92 Modem, IEEE1394 FireWire and standard built-in antenna for wireless LAN (802.11a or 802.11b) via internal miniPCI slot.

Technological leadership
The new EUROCOM LP285S Portable LCD PC is an exceptional value at a starting price of $1799 CDN. It offers a surprising amount of horsepower; all you have to worry about is accepting its compact and striking design. Eurocom, a company that made features such as of the touchpad, multiple drive support and the wireless network standard, always seems to show the rest of the PC industry which way the future lies. If the new LP285S Portable PC concept catches on, you can expect the entire computer industry to follow Eurocom's lead.
